These Douglas student ambassadors are hard at work preparing to serve as tour guides! They worked together with Mrs. Lessner to create talking points about each area of the school for new families. Student leaders are the best!

We had fun this morning during our morning meeting with the activity Sentence on a String. Each student had to come up with a word to add on and build a sentence. We used a ball of string and rolled it to a friend when it was their turn to add to the sentence. In the end, we had a fun web connecting all of our words together to make this sentence: One cat was lost in New York in the park, and the state governor found him under the car and took him home.

Watertown families recently hosted 14 students from WHS's partner school in Germany, the Werratalschule in Heringen. German and American students shared their cultures while at school as well as at local businesses Berres Brothers and Mullen's Dairy Bar (which was declared to have "the best burgers in America"). They also visited the Watertown fire department and the state capitol, where Senator Jagler and Representative Penterman made time for them. The students also enjoyed a Brewers' game and many other social events. In June, 14 WHS students are travelling to Germany and will be hosted by the same students who were here.

Lincoln STEM Panda Bots in Mrs. D's K/1 class have been learning about the structure and function of everyday items in PLTW. During this unit they created beanstalks to hold eggs, 3 little pig houses strong enough to withstand a wolf and paintbrushes that would paint in a special way.

Mrs. Staude's 6th grade science students have been working hard for the last 2 weeks creating a car using simple supplies. The first week they got into groups, sketched designs and began the process of creating their mousetrap car. When last Friday rolled around, both the students and I agreed that we needed more time to investigate and solve some of the issues they were experiencing. Critical thinking, Diagnosis and coming up with new prototypes were just some of the challenges the kids endured while conducting this project. The amount of endurance and perseverance took strain on the kids. However, that endurance and strength to keep going , allowed some of the students to create a better, stronger and more reliable car that continues to work every time they run it for testing. The teachable moments from this project were amazing to be part of and proves that science shouldn't be about a quick lesson or video but rather collaboration of minds coming together to create an amazing outcome such as this one! I'm proud and honored to be with such resilient students and continue to cheer them on when struggles arise.

A fun time was had by all at WUSD’s 30th Annual Children’s Day Fair on Saturday. Families were able to visit booths to learn about various different services offered throughout our area. Children participated in hands-on activities such as building a plane with our SkillsUSA students; pet animals in the FFA room; plant flowers, spin wheels for prizes, have their face painted; and visit with our police and fire personnel (just to name a few). A huge thank you goes out to all of our vendors for making this day special for our families. AND an extra special thank you to all the families who visited.

Mrs. Gratz’s 4/5 grade class at Schurz LOVES to read books by Alan Gratz. Together, the class has finished Two Degrees, which is a book about climate change. A few weeks ago, they wrote a letter to him to tell him about their adventures and the conversations his books provoke. Today, he wrote back. It sure was cool to hear from an author they all look up to!
