It was a picture-perfect morning last Friday for the annual Douglas Dash at Douglas Elementary School. Throughout the morning, the seven different grades levels were each assigned a 25-minute time slot for their run. As each grade was running, another grade was outside to cheer them on!

On Monday, May 6, Riverside Middle School had the privilege of inducting 30 outstanding students into the National Junior Honor Society. These students were recognized for demonstrating excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. The students are resourceful and dependable problem-solvers who uphold principles of morality and ethics. They are excited to promote school activities and exemplify positive attitudes about life. The students in Mrs. Peters' and Mrs. Roth's 4K classes at Webster Elementary School enjoyed learning about city of Watertown Street Department trucks this past Wednesday. The children asked many questions and learned the differences between a garbage truck and a dump truck. The highlight was seeing both trucks in action! Special thanks to Stacy and the city of Watertown crew for visiting!

Last week a group of Mr. Gibson’s HOSA - Future Health Professionals students from Watertown High School qualified and competed at The HOSA State Leadership Conference and Competition held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Miliani Trujillo and Ashley Almendarez Martinez took 4th place in the team event - Forensic Science, and Grace Walter qualified for the International Competition held in Houston, Texas by taking second place in Medical Spelling. Congratulations to Watertown High School seniors Jacob Johnson and Addison Schuch for being named Herb Kohl Educational Foundation award recipients! The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation recently announced 304 Wisconsin students, teachers, and administrators are the recipients of the organization’s 2024 Student Excellence and Initiative, Teacher Fellowship and Principal Leadership awards. Student Excellence and Initiative Scholarships of $10,000 will be awarded to 187 graduating high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence and initiative and have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership in their community. The Kohl Foundation award program was established by Herb Kohl, former U.S. senator, philanthropist, and businessman who died December 27, 2023. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded nearly $38 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools.

WHS Art Student Rae Heier was selected as the Grand Prize Best in Show award winner at this year’s State Youth Art Month exhibit for her painting ā€œAll Trails Lead to You.ā€ The show was held at East Towne Mall last month and included hundreds of artworks that were selected to advance from regional exhibits around the state. Heier’s painting was chosen for the top honor by a panel of judges from the Wisconsin Art Education Association. Heier was recognized during the awards ceremony along with art teacher Dave Pawl, who submitted her work. Both received prizes from Blick Art Materials, sponsor of the award. Congratulations to Rae and Mr. Pawl!

The Douglas Art Club students, under the guidance and instruction of their Art teacher, Mrs. Templin, recently presented pieces they had created to the Watertown Regional Medical Center. Pictured, Douglas Art Club members explain and display their pieces before donating them to the WRMC for display. Community connections make Watertown a GREAT place to live and learn! Shout-out to Mrs. Culp for making the connection, Mrs. Templin for inspiring our artists to do amazing work, and the ARTISTS for working so hard to create beautiful pieces to brighten the days of patients at WRMC!

The WUSD Student Services team recently toured the newly-opened Matz Center located on Milford Street in Watertown. The Matz Center is a youth crisis stabilization facility for children aged 10-17 in need of residential short-term mental health programming in a supportive and structured environment. During the tour, the student services team held a collaborative discussion regarding youth mental health and resources for parents and guardians. In addition, they discussed the different responsibilities of student service educators, mental health professionals, and parents/guardians in meeting the needs of children.

Camp Matz
On Tuesday, March 12th, WUSD hosted the first ever Multilingual Family Night. District EL staff partnered with the Watertown Chamber of Commerce to put on an event at the Watertown Public Library that connected multilingual families to community businesses and resources. Over 100 people attended the event along with 20 businesses and the Watertown Police and Fire Department. Members of the National Spanish Honor Society also participated and created art projects with the children in correlation with the story "The Dot." Both Watertown families and businesses felt that it was a wonderful opportunity to connect and strengthen relationships within the community.
