Watertown High School students received over $700,000 worth of local scholarships Monday evening. In addition to the many local awards presented, a number of students received financial aid packages from the universities they plan to attend, substantially raising that figure of local support.
Heading the list of winners was Megan Doherty who received scholarships totaling $37,600. She received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000, Watertown FFA Alumni 4 Year at $3,500, Watertown AgriBusiness Club - Jim Ostrom Award at $3,000, American Legion Post 189 at $2,000, Coach J’s JamFest at $1,500, Watertown Athletic Booster Club at $1,400, and NACK Valedictorian at $200. Megan is the daughter of Kevin and Jean Doherty. After high school, Megan plans to study at University of Nebraska - Lincoln to study business analytics and Spanish.
Teagan McGuire was awarded $36,095 in scholarships. He received the Karl H. Zinser valued at $35,000 and WHS Curtain Club valued at $1,095. Teagan is the son of Heather and Tim McGuire. Teagan plans on attending University of Minnesota - Twin Cities to study accounting.
Sarah Rodriguez Machado received $35,200 in awards. She received the Karl H. Zinser valued at $35,000 and the NACK Valedictorian at $200. Sarah is the daughter of Zoraida Machado and Cesar Machado. After high school, Sara will be attending UW-Whitewater to obtain her BBA in Accounting as well as becoming a certified translator.
Jack Zoellick was awarded $33,000 in scholarships. He received the Joseph E. Davies valved at $23,000 and the Joseph and Sharon Darcey valued at $10,000. Jack is the son of Julie and Terry Zoellick. Next year, Jack will be attending UW-Madison to study agronomy.
Ian Griffin received the WHS Class of 1955 scholarship totaling $32,000. Ian is the son of David and Lisa Griffin. Ian will be attending UW-Madison to study astronomy and physics.
Addison Stas received $29,250 in awards. She received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000, Steve Hoppe Memorial Nursing Scholarship at $2,500, and Watertown Athletic Booster Club at $750. Addison is the daughter of Troy and Becky Stas. After high school, Addison will be attending Carthage College to study nursing.
Sophia Nieto received $29,000 in scholarships. She received the Betty J. Joseph valued at $27,000 and the AAUW at $2,000. Sophia is the daughter of Jamie and Raul Nieto. Next year, Sophia will be attending UW-La Crosse to study biomedicine with a pre-medicine track.
Marissa Bischoff was awarded $27,250 in scholarships. She received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000, Ixonia Volunteer Firemen’s Association at $1,000, and the American Legion School Award at $250. Marissa is the daughter of Daniel and Brenda Bischoff. She plans on attending Carroll University to obtain her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
Ryanna Bilgrien received the Betty J. Joseph valued at $27,000. Ryanna is the daughter of Tony and Amy Bilgrien. Next year, Ryanna plans on attending UW-Milwaukee to study biomedical sciences.
Morgan Sellnow received the Betty J. Joseph valued at $27,000. Morgan is the daughter of Sabrina Dathan-Sellnow and Todd Sellnow. Next year, she plans on attending UW-La Crosse to study biology.
Julian Byrne received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000. Julian is the son of Amy and David Byrne. He is planning to attend St. Olaf College to study exercise science with the intent of becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
Matthew Hammond received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000. Matthew is the son of Tim and Heather Hammond. He plans on attending Iowa State University to study Aerospace Engineering.
Laura Thielke received the Rev. Frederick and Ruth Lemke valued at $26,000. Laura is the daughter of TBA. Next year, Laura plans on attending Carroll University to study sociology.
Katie Hanus-Krueger received $24,500 in awards. She received the Larry and Sally Reich scholarship valued at $20,000, AAUW at $2,000, Ixonia Volunteer Firemen’s Association at $1,000, John and Carleen Schloemer at $1,000, and Student Council at $500. Katie is the daughter of Kailey Jo Gruling and Dustin Gruling. After high school, Katie plans on attending UW-Madison to major in nursing.
