Student Dress Code Policy Update

Dear WUSD Families,

Over the course of this summer, the School District reviewed and updated the district’s student Dress and Grooming Policy (Board Policy 5511). This updated policy was formally adopted on July 28, 2025 and will be in effect for the 2025-2026 school year.

The Board of Education recognizes that clothing is a personal choice and an expression of individuality. However, in order to maintain a safe, respectful, and disruption-free learning environment, the updated dress code sets clear expectations for student attire during the school day and at school-sponsored events.

Key Guidelines:

  • Clothing must cover all private body parts and undergarments.

  • No gaps between tops and bottoms; no spaghetti straps, strapless tops, or a-shirts (a sleeveless undershirt)

  • Hats and hoods may not be worn during school hours (exceptions for religious, health, safety, or sensory sensitivity reasons).

  • No face coverings (including sunglasses, except for transition lenses) unless for religious or documented disability-related reasons.

  • Ripped or see-through clothing must have an additional layer underneath.

  • Words or images on clothing must not be obscene, vulgar, or promote illegal activities or violence.

  • The bottom hem of shorts and skirts must be at least fingertip length with arms straight while standing.

A complete copy of the policy is available in the Student Handbooks and on the District’s website at https://go.boarddocs.com/wi/watertown/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=DKGHNU49511C .

Enforcement:
If a student’s clothing does not meet the dress code standard, staff will ask the student to adjust their clothing or change into clothing provided by the school. If no alternative clothing is available or the student chooses not to change their attire, families will be contacted to either bring appropriate clothing to school or to pick up the student so they can return once dressed in clothing compliant with policy.

We appreciate your partnership in helping students arrive at school dressed for success and ready to learn. Please review these guidelines with your student before the start of the school year to ensure a smooth transition and thank you for your continued support in fostering a positive learning environment.
