Dear Staff, Families, and Community Members,
The Board of Education voted this evening (February 23, 2026) to close LEAP (Lebanon) Elementary School and Lincoln STEM Elementary School at the conclusion of the 2026–2027 school year. We want to take time to share the reasoning behind this decision, recognize the emotions many will be feeling, and explain how we will move forward together as a school community.
This decision was made only after careful thought and extensive review. Over many months, the Board studied enrollment trends, building use, financial projections, and feedback from staff, families, and community members. Like many school districts, we are facing ongoing financial pressures and changes in student enrollment. The Board has a responsibility to use district resources wisely while continuing to provide strong learning opportunities for every student. After thoughtful discussion and consideration, the Board determined that closing LEAP Elementary School and Lincoln STEM Elementary School at the end of the 2026–2027 school year is a necessary step to support the long-term stability and sustainability of our district.
We understand this news is difficult. Schools are more than buildings; they are places where relationships are formed, traditions are built, and memories are made. We recognize that this decision may bring sadness, uncertainty, and many questions. Please know that we approach this transition with empathy, respect, and deep appreciation for the students, families, and staff who make this school community special.
Most importantly, our commitment to students and staff remains unchanged. Our priority is to ensure that every learner continues to feel supported, valued, and successful throughout this transition. District leaders will work closely with families and staff to develop a thoughtful and comprehensive transition plan. This will include clear communication, student placement planning, staff transition support, transportation considerations, and opportunities to celebrate the history and accomplishments of LEAP Elementary School and Lincoln STEM Elementary School during its final year.
This will be a collaborative process. Families and staff will have the opportunity to ask questions, share feedback, and help shape the transition so that students feel welcomed and prepared in their next learning environment.
Thank you for the care, dedication, and partnership you bring to our schools each day. While adjusting to change can be challenging and takes time, we will move forward together with compassion, purpose, and a shared commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences for every child.
In Community & Education,
Jason Bull & Sarah Oudenhoven
WUSD Interim Co-Superintendents
