Facilities Planning

A special meeting of the Watertown Unified School District Board of Education was held May 27 to review proposed plans and options for district long-range facilities planning. At present, any discussion around facilities planning is focused on understanding the future maintenance requirements and projected costs related to the long-term care and/or consolidation of WUSD facilities.

Plunkett Raysich Architects (PRA) has been engaged to gather feedback from both the community and the board in order to assess and envision the district's future building needs. Board of Education President Craig Wortman said the construction ideas presented are simply points for discussion at this time – no decisions will be made without prior input from the community.

“Watertown has shown strong support for a proactive approach to planning for potential expenses, if necessary,” Wortman said. “The replacement or consolidation of buildings is also being considered as part of the district's long-term planning, which looks ahead 20 years.”

Wortman added, “Some of these concepts come with preliminary cost estimates should the voting public choose to proceed with them.” He said the figures that have been shared represent the full cost if the district were to move forward with all proposed ideas.

“Any plan put to voters, however, would likely involve a smaller subset of the concepts being discussed,” Wortman said. “The district is not committed to any specific action at this time.”
