Parent Update

Greetings Gosling Families!

We had a great first week of school and I want to thank those of you who attended our Back to School Fair on Monday.  The WHS teachers, clubs, activities, and sports were on full display and it was great to see the students and families who attended!

These weekly updates will attempt to keep you informed about recent events and upcoming events of significance. I would encourage you to scan through these updates for information most pertinent to your student. As is always the case, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have.

As the academic year begins we encourage parents and students to talk about the learning and skill-building taking place each day at school, and we urge you to ask your student if you have questions about course content and grading procedures in a particular course. We will continue our focus on assessing and grading for learning to ensure we communicate current levels of achievement.

There may be times this year when your student may struggle academically. When that happens, we would encourage you to ask your student the following questions:

  • Was there a rubric or specific criteria provided for that assessment?

  • What feedback has the teacher provided?

  • Have you completed all the homework/practice?

  • Have you assessed or resubmitted work?

  • Have you communicated with the teacher and/or made arrangements to meet with the teacher?

  • How do you organize your work/materials?

If you are still uncertain as to how you can best help your student, please feel free to contact the teacher. Here are some questions that may assist you:

  • Can you describe the expectations for this course?

  • Is my student completing all the homework or practice opportunities?

  • Has my student communicated their struggles to you and/or made arrangements to meet with you for assistance?

  • Can my student reassess or re-submit assessments?

  • What skills can my student improve on to find success in your course?

  • What else can my student do?

If additional assistance is needed, the Student Services Office is a great place to discuss alternative ways to support your student. You are also welcome to contact any administrator. We hope you and your family have a fantastic school year!

Josh Kerr, Principal
Watertown High School

Here is what you need to know:

  • Accessing curriculum for students during absences: As we prioritize student access to curriculum during student absences we want to make accessing course material convenient for families. WHS has created a document using this link to assist students as they need to access each teacher’s course classroom (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.) as well as communicate via email with their teacher.   In the event your student is absent for an extended period of time please be sure to use this link, also posted on the WHS website, to ensure they do not miss academic coursework.  Teacher emails are also directly included on the document so the information is readily available.  Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher for additional clarification!
