Dear Parents, Families and Students, Friends and Neighbors,

It is hard to believe that we are already two months into 2017!  Welcoming a new year is always exciting because it creates a great opportunity for reflection and renewal.  The Board of Education approved the District’s proposal to open a K-5 STEM elementary school at Lincoln School.  We are excited to be able to offer this fantastic opportunity for our elementary students and families.  We plan to do a gradual implementation in 2017-2018 school year with full implementation in 2018-2019.  Our WHS Academic Decathlon Team is ranked first in the State heading into their fifth consecutive trip to the State Tournament in March.  We have seen our students improve their skills in math and reading over the course of first semester, we have seen our athletes compete and represent us admirably across the state, we have seen our students, staff and parents engage in opportunities to give back, and we have seen our students perform in musicals, contests, and concerts.  We look forward to a new year of continued great accomplishments for our students and staff!

Budget continues to be a challenge for the District.  Over the past ten years WUSD has experienced revenues of less than two percent per year while the healthcare trend has increased at approximately 7.5% per year. This year the District will again be faced with budget reductions, and the administrative team will work with the Board of Education to propose reductions that are responsible to the students, families, and staff in the WUSD.  These reductions will continue to challenge us to look at how we can operate differently as a District.

We have many exciting events coming up over the next month.  Our winter sports season will be ending, and we will begin gearing up for our spring sports season.  There are many upcoming concerts, literacy nights, and other events for our students and parents to enjoy.  If you are looking for a fun way to support the school district, considering participating in the Jig Jog on March 11th supporting the Education Foundation and the Fiesta 5K on Saturday, May 20th supporting Schurz School.

“The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams today, in every little way you possibly can.”  Mike Dooley

May all of you find a way to live the life of your dreams in 2017.
